McLaughlin & Harvey welcomed 30 new Graduates and Trainees into the business in September.
In roles across Civil Engineering, Site Operations, Quantity Surveying, Design, Building Services, SHEQ and Marketing, the new starts from both sides of the business came together for a three-day induction programme hosted at the Galgorm Resort and Spa in Northern Ireland.
The induction programme is led by the HR team and is designed to provide all participants with the opportunity to build strong connections with their peers. In addition, they experience the full scope of McLaughlin & Harvey capabilities and help develop skills that will guide them in their chosen careers.
Over the three days, representatives from each department took time to provide a deeper insight into their role, their department and where it sits within the wider company.
The Graduate Scheme, which runs for a total of three years, gives participants the opportunity for continuous professional development in different formats. It also assists them with gaining the various competencies, skills and abilities necessary for future leadership positions.
Career progression for Graduates and Trainees
Throughout the scheme, participants complete Core rotational placements, developed to give them confidence in the workplace and a higher understanding of the disciplines that contribute to McLaughlin & Harvey’s success. All of our Trainees receive personal one-to-one mentoring throughout the scheme. Our Graduates receive support through our ‘buddy’ scheme during their first year and ongoing mentoring from their Line Manager throughout the remaining years of the programme.
Participants will also complete a Level 3 certificate in Leadership & Management (ILM) and become STEM ambassadors. These qualifications support their professional development as well as McLaughlin & Harvey’s social value commitments.
As part of a 4-year Trainee Scheme, our trainees attend their chosen university one day a week and can spend the remaining days acquiring hands-on, practical experience through either on-site work or in the office environment. Each of our trainees is supported by a McLaughlin & Harvey mentor who will help facilitate their course-related and work-based learning.
Our Early Careers programmes target those aspiring to make an impact in their career. We believe in growing our business by investing in your future. Currently, 8% of our workforce are in earn-and-learn positions.
It was lovely to welcome all 30 of our 2023 Graduates and Trainees at their Induction Week on 12 September. The Graduate and Trainee scheme has developed considerably over the last 5 years, along with the induction, and it was great to host this year’s event at The Galgorm Resort and Spa. The induction is structured to allow and encourage our young people to get to know each other whilst providing a deeper insight into the Company and how each of the departments work together. The scheme provides a platform to support our entry-level employees in those critical first few years, not only in their specialisms but also by developing them in all areas of the business with a view to creating our future leaders.

The induction was a great way to connect with my fellow Graduates and Trainees and get to know more about the company and our role within the construction industry. Every day is a new and exciting challenge here and I have felt welcome since my first day. I consider myself very lucky to be working in an environment where I’m continually learning and have a great support system in place through the buddy system.

The induction week at the Galgorm was a special experience. It provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow graduates who shared our passion for construction. The setting, amidst the surroundings of The Galgorm, added a calming touch to our professional interactions. Throughout the week, we delved into the core values and vision of McLaughlin & Harvey, gaining valuable insights into the company’s ethos and mission. This experience not only fostered a strong sense of camaraderie among the graduates, but also left us well-equipped to embark on our journey with McLaughlin & Harvey, feeling inspired and motivated to contribute to the company’s success. The whole event made us all feel valued as young professionals and showed us we can have an exciting career with Mclaughlin & Harvey.
