On 31 January, the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) celebrated a key milestone: completing phase one of the redevelopment at Culham Science Centre.
The development of Culham Science Centre aims to make the campus into a leading global centre for fusion technology and the realisation of fusion energy. This will be key in supporting the UK’s ambitions to deliver sustainable fusion energy and help achieve net zero carbon by 2050.

Working with McLaughlin & Harvey, UKAEA has completed the main building, garage, and new security hut. Improving the surrounding grounds, the campus now benefits from the installation of security fencing and external lighting, a new entrance road, hard and soft landscaping, and resin surfaces.
The campus’s development continues, with phase two commencing in early February. Security will be further enhanced with additional barriers, bi-fold gates, and lighting, as well as the removal of legacy buildings no longer needed. Development of external spaces is also planned, with additional staff parking spaces, landscaping, and outdoor furniture.
Fatos Lleshi, Senior Project Manager at McLaughlin & Harvey, said,
“We are pleased with the work we have achieved to date on the Culham Science Campus project. Completing the initial work ahead of our scheduled date in late February provides us with an opportunity to plan ahead for the second phase, ensuring we maintain the high standards we delivered so far. We look forward to seeing the completed campus later this year when key research and innovation for fusion technology will continue to take place.”
