Restoration of historic 76 x 46m Granton Gas Holder.
Refurbishment &
Restoration
The original structure was opened in 1901 and was one of twelve gas storage tanks for the greater Edinburgh area. The structure had been painted a total of 72 times, with four new coats applied during the project.
Works include the refurbishment and preservation of the listed structure for future generations.
The frame has over 100,000 rivets, including all tanks, tank walls, carriages, and other details.
Additionally works involve the development of the space within the restored gas holder. The new space has multi-sensory play zones, a dedicated space for permanent and temporary public art, a relaxation area, and outdoor trails and tracks for exercise. It also has a large outdoor space for sports, markets, seasonal events, community use, festivals, performance arts, exhibitions and play.
We are also carrying out landscaping works including planting trees, shrubs and wildflowers to improve biodiversity and local habitat in the area.
Creating a new and exciting multifunctional public space at Granton Waterfront.
