Increasing the container storage capacity of Liverpool 2 by 60%.
Liverpool 2 was constructed on partially reclaimed land on the Mersey side of the docks allowing a deep-water container quay on the river and avoiding any requirement for large container vessels to enter the dock system.
Phase 2 involved the extension of the container yard to the north side of the area that had been infilled but not developed during phase 1.
Works also included the removal of existing surcharge spoil on-site from the reclamation works.
We also constructed hard standing areas for the storage of empty containers and the storage of out-of-gauge cargo. Additionally, we also installed a new wind wall.
As part of our works, we carried out enabling works to create a new car storage facility so cars could be relocated before the main works could commence.
Our site was adjacent to the Phase 1 operational container terminal within the live port environment, and construction work could not affect operations and vehicle movements to this busy port facility. We implemented traffic management measures to safely manage the interface with existing port traffic, in particular giving priority to container terminal traffic and easing traffic flows into the site.
Once completed, phase 1 and phase 2 now operate as one entity with our works integrating seamlessly with phase 1.
Liverpool 2 is now the largest automated container terminal in the North of England.
