Bringing together the Liverpool Football Club’s First Team and Academy operations for the first time.
The AXA Training Centre is one of the most modern sports facilities in the world. The building typology and design is completely bespoke to suit the specific functional requirements and to reflect the identity of the client, Liverpool Football Club.
Externally and internally, the building uses a simple palette of robust, natural materials which have been carefully crafted to create an environment of the highest quality which motivates and inspires. Achieving a balance between the different areas used for elite training, injury management and sports science with the offices for coaching, analytics and scouting, alongside recreation areas for players required innovative architectural solutions to ensure the building environment works for all users.
The innovative approach extended to sustainability with passive design principles and a fabric-first approach to maximise opportunities from the outset. Significance was also placed on the generosity of internal space and ensuring abundant natural light to promote wellness.
The successful delivery of the 9,2000 sqm AXA Training Centre involved an open and collaborative approach from a large, multi-disciplinary team working in conjunction with the client at all stages. The unique, specialist nature of the building meant close consultation with the Local Authority Building Control team to ensure compliance. Despite delays due to COVID-19, the project was finished on budget and since opening in November 2020, the building has received widespread media coverage.

The facility is great and whoever has the chance to visit will be impressed. It is a wonderful building – you have everything you need now and for the future. It’s pretty much perfect.
